Question: What is the appropriate thing to do when a golf ball hits your house?
(Posted by: mom4boys on 2012-02-22 08:42:27)
We live on a golf course and frequently find golf balls around. If a ball lands in the yard I usually just leave it until later, but what should I do when a ball hits the house and scares me half to death? They can be loud and the first thing I want to do is go out and check for damage. I'm just not sure how to respond (w/ o using expletives!) when the golfers drive up. I even had a guy ask for his ball back once! I figure a golf ball that hits my house should be mine to keep! OK - Our house backs up to a golf course. I know we are taking a risk and replacing windows etc. does get expensive. If you are a bad enough golfer to hit my house and possibly break something - even almost my child once - I will not give you the ball back! That is the cost of the sport just like replacing broken windows is the cost of living near a golf course! |

It is a little hazardous living near a golf course when you have the once a year golfer hitting a ball off your roof. As far as that goes, that just goes along with the territory of living near one. As far as giving there balls back, I would pick them up and try to sell them back to them. Explain that you are only trying to finance to pay for the windows that have been broken. Might as well make some money off the people who have hit errant shots at your house. |

Find out what cars the golfers are driving, knife the tires. |

Saying something to the golfers won't solve anything. They'll either just be apologetic or tell you to go pound dirt. You'll have to file a formal complaint with the golf course itself, and maybe even the city or someone else. Look into different ways to file complaints online. What do you mean you "live on a golf course "? lol you mean you live near one? |

Then... what's the issue? You knew what you were getting into, and you know you won't give balls back (which you don't have to do). Try upgrading to plexiglass/ shatterproof windows and vinyl siding and continue on with your life. |

Plant trees to prevent errant shots from ruining your outdoor experience. |

Keep the balls if you want but unless you play golf they are useless. Check to see if there is any damage done. If the culprit owns up to the damage then ask for his insurance details. Don't laugh. Most decent golfers DO have insurance. If you cannot trace the culprit of the damage go to the Golf Club and speak to the Pro. Most Golf Clubs have a blanket insurance that might just resolve the situation. DO NOT lose your temper because that certainly will not attract any co-operation whatsoever. |
